This collection brings together five articles by Oliver Ding, written in February 2026, documenting the early development of Cognitive Hydrology—a new theoretical enterprise concerned with how knowledge develops, how ideas flow and transform over time, and how themes and concepts live in a person's creative life.

The articles did not begin as a collection. They grew, one from another, over fifteen days. The opening piece introduced Cognitive Hydrology as a named theme in the epilogue of Lake 42. What followed was a chain of discoveries: a framework for understanding how concepts develop through three layers of theory and practice; a new methodological form called Thematic Development Study; a trilogy named and unified under the Cognitive Hydrology banner; and finally, four first principles drawn from a lifetime of learning from water.

Together, the five articles cover the essential ground of a new enterprise: its core metaphor, its theoretical framework, its methodology, its historical scope, and its foundational commitments.

What makes this collection unusual is that it does not merely describe Cognitive Hydrology—it demonstrates it. The collection itself is a living record of how a theoretical enterprise develops: not through planning, but through flow; not through accumulation, but through generative confluence. Each article emerged from the previous one, the way a stream finds its course. The end of Lake 42 became the beginning of something new. A question about fragmented ideas became a framework. A framework produced a practice. A practice prompted a larger review. A review revealed a name. A name called for first principles.

In this sense, the collection is its own first case study. Cognitive Hydrology, from its very first days, was already enacting what it set out to describe.
