This set of cards is a collaboration between amityune and Possible Press, designed based on Oliver Ding's 2020 book After Affordance: The Ecological Perspective to Human Action. In the original book, Ding offers a 3E model to describe the affordances-action loop.

These cards expand the 3E model into a seven moments framework.

The Story

What happens when you walk past a bookstore?

You might glance at the window display, step inside, find yourself drawn to a particular shelf. Your hand reaches out, touches a spine, pulls a book free. You open it. The pages speak. You read. And when you leave—whether with the book in hand or its memory in mind—something has changed.

This is the story these seven cards tell. Not as theory, but as lived experience.

Enter: You stand outside, looking in. The threshold awaits.

Appear: You step inside. Books and you now share the same space, the same moment.

Toward: A book faces you. Its cover calls to you silently.

Near: You walk closer. Your hand reaches toward the shelf. One arm's length from possibility.

Unfold: You take the book down and open it. What was closed becomes a gateway.

Act: You read. The possibility becomes real.

Exit: You leave, but something stays. The encounter becomes memory.

Beyond the Bookstore

This isn't just about books. It's about how any meaningful experience unfolds—how we enter spaces, encounter possibilities, act on them, and carry something with us when we leave.

This structure can be mapped onto any situation where you enter a space, engage with what you find there, and leave changed:

  • A café and a conversation
  • A museum and a painting
  • A forest and a trail
  • A gathering and a connection
